GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS NOVEMBER AS DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH

Governor Susana Martinez and the New Mexico Department of Health announced that November is Diabetes Awareness Month, an annual health observance increasing awareness about the impact of diabetes for residents, families and their communities in our state. Governor Martinez signed the proclamation yesterday, following World Diabetes Day on Wednesday. The New Mexico Department of Health estimates that more than 220,000 adult residents have diabetes and only eight out of ten of those are aware of their condition. The department also estimates more than 549,000 residents have prediabetes- a condition that precedes the Type-2 disease, in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal.
